Some recent paintings.

various sizes

I have been painting lately but I haven't posted them on the blog.  I had a little coffee shop show to put up by the first of October and found that I didn't have any stock. Frantic painting ensued and I got enough to meagerly fill the walls. Nine or ten paintings I think.  So glad that's over! These several are ones I've done since then.

Chunks of oranges thinking about a possible future. They didn't make it to jam.  I ate them. Bwaa hahaha!

Are they daisies or black-eyed Susans? They are for sure the last good ones of the season. The rest aren't worth picking. The garden is fading.  fall seems a little early this year.

238 Bird practice
6x6" oil on masonite

I found another bird figurine at an antique shop. Normally they seem to want upwards of $5-7.00 for such things, which I think is outrageous. but this one had a chip on off the beak, which doesn't bother me since I'm just going to use it as a model, so it was priced at 75 cents. Better still I think my mom had one like it when I was growing up.

Anyway, this is a practice board, a great way to learn how to paint complex objects. The size of the board is 6x6" as you already know, and I subdivide it into 3x3' quadrants. Each quadrant contains a single 10 minute exercise in capturing the subjects' likeness. This method really reduces the stress of painting. Which is great as I can get a little stressy about things. Thanks to Carol Marine for introducing me to this exercise.

I love my practice boards. I can't imagine anyone wanting them, but I also can't imagine selling them.

 Bonsai
12 x 12" oil on masonite

I've been looking at the work of Jan Devliegher
He did a series of paintings of plates call "Treasury".  Each painting is about 5' tall. Impressive!
And the brushwork is divine. I'll keep his work in mind and try my own version later.

I liked this one enough to post, but on enough to offer it for sale.
Also, these blues are scanning a little "hot". It's not this bright in person.

A new style for me. Thought I'd do some work with colors rather than concentrating on the forms. I kind of like them. On the bottom one the gesso was really bumpy. which is not so good, but it looks worse in the scan than in real life.

8 x 8 oil on board.

Three paintings of radishes. Don't know why I liked them. Maybe because they're white instead of the usual red. I know the little tails are really interesting. The blues came out nice in the last one, not too cool.

The second bacon eggs biscuits and gravy painting.  It was just dry enough to scan tonight. I did touch up the bacon and eggs as they were looking a little flat. But now, done is done. I hope to have it in the mail to Nicholas tomorrow.

I just got accepted to a gallery! Yay me!  It's The Phoenix Gallery on the Country Club Plaza, in Kansas City, of course. They only took two to start. but it really feels great.

It's dry and scanned so you can see it properly.

I accepted a little commission to paint a breakfast. Bacon, eggs and biscuits and gravy.  So here is my process. I prefer to work directly from life but sometimes that just doesn't seem practical. In this case since I've never painted biscuits and gravy and because biscuits and gravy have no good shape, I made a breakfast and photographed it. Here are the results.

Deisel and Diamond
6 x 6
oil on board

I co-worker is retiring next month. You can tell that she is looking forward to it. normal she is a bit cranky but lately, she's gotten much friendlier and she even looks younger. She says she's really ready to go. But I know she'l miss these two guys, the owners dogs. So they will be my little retirement present for her.

A Bunch of Carrots

I like the carrots with the tops. So much more interesting to paint. But also so much more expensive to buy.  I wonder if the tops have any culinary value or if they are solely for looks.

My boyfriend is very fond of this type of cookie.  I however like to think I've outgrown them.

small

not quite so small.

Silk poppies on a floral tablecloth.
I did the first one 6 x 6 and the second one a bit larger 8 x 8.  As I'm scanning them it looks like they scan a bit more vivid than they are in really life.
